Interior ceiling temperatures of 6 control hutches and 6 hutches with reflective covers at 2pm.

In an effort to increase the health and survival of dairy calves, Texas A&M University's Dr. Ted Friend undertook a project to figure out how to limit the heat stress losses that many farms experience.  After eight years of research, Ted was able to find the optimum reflective material and demonstrate the effectiveness of  "Cool-Calf Covers™" in reducing heat load on calves in hutches . See the figures below that show the differences in hutch ceiling temperatures when using the covers. This greatly improves calf comfort and health in high heat environments.
